LingoDeer Review: A Good Tool for Learning Spanish

When it comes to Spanish learning, which language apps come to mind first?

Duolingo? Babbel? Or Italki?

As a Spanish instructor, I love exploring different resources to see how they teach Spanish learning in unique and engaging ways.

This time, I decided to try LingoDeer, a popular language app. Though LingoDeer is known for its focus on Asian languages, I was curious to see how well it works for those looking to learn Spanish.

In this LingoDeer review, I’ll share my insights on learning Spanish with this app, including its key features, user experience, and some of my personal opinions.

If you’re wondering whether LingoDeer is the right tool for your Spanish learning journey, this is the right place!

What is LingoDeer?

LingoDeer is a comprehensive language learning app initially developed to teach Asian languages like Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.

However, it doesn’t stop there! LingoDeer also offers courses in 19 languages in total, including Spanish, German, Portuguese, French, and Italian.

These language courses are available on the LingoDeer website and can also be accessed through the app, which you can download from the App Store or Google Play.

This accessibility makes it easy for anyone to engage in learning languages with LingoDeer.

Key Features & Learning Tips

I think this is hands down the best feature of LingoDeer.

These days, many language learning apps focus on making learning feel like a game, which can be fun, but sometimes you feel like you haven’t actually learned much.

But LingoDeer fixes that with its Learning Tips, which neatly organize grammar and key points in a super helpful way.

You can check out these tips before starting a lesson, review them afterward, or even refer to them as you learn.

It’s like having a personal guide at your fingertips.

I think this feature is one of the reasons why LingoDeer is often called the best language app for learning Asian languages.

Since these languages have completely different writing systems and language structures, it’s tough for English speakers to dive into Asian languages just through exercises.

But with LingoDeer’s clear, step-by-step tips, you can really build your understanding at your own pace!

And guess what? It’s just as helpful for learning Spanish! Spanish and English have their own differences, like masculine and feminine nouns, word order for adjectives, and unique verbs like “tener” (to have).

You can learn Spanish with LingoDeer and focus on its grammar tips feature to make Spanish learning so much easier.

The LingoDeer UX & Interface

A good language app for Spanish (or any language) needs a clean and user-friendly interface, and I think LingoDeer delivers just that.

There are only three tabs in the app:

  • Learn for lessons
  • Review for revisiting what you’ve learned
  • Me for your profile and settings

It’s simple and easy to navigate.

Such uncluttered design helps you focus on Spanish learning without feeling overwhelmed, and the soft yellow theme creates a calm and engaging learning environment.

Structured Lessons for Spanish Learning

One thing I appreciate about the way users can go about learning Spanish with LingoDeer is the structured lessons.

Each course focuses on a specific topic, such as Food & Drinks, Questions, or Numbers.

And each lesson breaks down complex grammar and vocabulary into manageable chunks. This learning structure is perfect for those with busy schedules who still want to progress steadily in their Spanish learning.

The variety of exercise types, such as listening, speaking, and sentence building, makes learning interactive and engaging.

These types of exercises can keep your learning experience engaging, and helping you stay motivated and less likely to get bored.

They also ensure a well-rounded approach to learning Spanish, making each step feel clear and purposeful.

Review Tab for Consistent Learning

Consistency is key to effective language learning, and I think it’s clear that LingoDeer understands this.

The Review tab allows you to revisit lessons through quick 5-minute quizzes, vocabulary review, or grammar practice.

One great feature is that you can choose which lessons to review.

So, if you’re already confident with certain vocabulary or grammar topics, you can simply skip them.

What I Like About Learning Spanish with LingoDeer

Now, let’s talk about my personal favorites.

1. Learning Tips

As I mentioned earlier, this is truly the most outstanding feature of LingoDeer, and I have to admit, it’s also my favorite part. That’s why it’s worth emphasizing again.

Every course on the app comes with Learning Tips that neatly summarize key grammar concepts, making it easier to grasp essential rules as you progress.

These tips are a game-changer, providing the extra support needed to confidently move forward in your Spanish learning.

For example, in the Food & Drink course, it taught me how to use “un” and “una”, and how to conjugate “comer (to eat)” and “beber (to drink)”.

These small tips can help you to overview the key points and help you organize the knowledge in your head.

You know what’s great? The explanations are so detailed that you won’t even need a textbook anymore. Plus, you can easily take notes right alongside these tips, making your learning experience more personalized and fun!

2. Castilian vs. Latin American Spanish

One thing that I found interesting while using LingoDeer for Spanish learning is the option to choose between Castilian Spanish and Latin American Spanish.

I thought this distinction is great because it tailors your Spanish learning experience to the variant, you’re most interested in.

3. Alphabet Section

If you just started learning Spanish, definitely check out the Alphabet section before jumping into the lessons.

It’s a helpful guide for learning Spanish pronunciation and letters, giving you a solid foundation.

You can even tap and listen to each letter’s pronunciation—so handy!

In fact, I’d recommend starting with this section for any language you start learning with LingoDeer.

4. Offline Learning

I think offline learning is another huge advantage of LingoDeer.

You can download lessons in advance, making it easy to study without Wi-Fi or internet connection.

This is particularly helpful when you’re on the go or in places with limited internet access, such as on an airplane, like this Reddit user mentioned.

This feature ensures you never miss a chance to learn Spanish.

5. Clear and Natural Audio Experience

One thing that really makes LingoDeer stand out in language learning is its use of real human voices for all the reading materials.

Unlike many apps that rely on AI-generated voices, LingoDeer offers a more authentic approach.

This is particularly beneficial for those wanting to learn Spanish, as hearing natural, human voices significantly enhances the learning experience.

Since the app features real human recordings, the clarity, speed, and tone are all very natural, making it perfect for learners.

You can easily repeat the words and phrases after the audio, allowing you to improve your pronunciation effectively.

This approach truly enriches your experience when you learn Spanish with LingoDeer and helps you master the language more quickly than you would with AI-generated voices.

So, if you’re searching for a language app for Spanish that prioritizes authentic learning, LingoDeer is definitely the way to go, in my opinion.

Areas for Improvement

While LingoDeer offers a solid foundation for Spanish learning, there are a few areas where it could improve:

Limited Language Depth

LingoDeer is great for beginners and intermediates, advanced learners might find the content a bit limited.

In honesty, I’d love to see more advanced lessons added in the future. With advanced lessons, this Lingodeer review may be a little more positive.

Motivation Features

While suitable for serious learners, some may find it challenging to stay motivated, especially for beginners.

I suggest incorporating features like ranking races or badge collections to reward users.

Skipping Ahead

If you’re already familiar with some Spanish, you can skip ahead by using the “Test Out” feature.

However, you’re only allowed three mistakes during the test. If you make more than that, you’ll either need to start over or complete the previous lessons.

This process can feel a bit annoying, especially since you have to test out of courses in order.

Another drawback is that even after passing the “Test Out” for a section, you still won’t have access to all the lessons in that unit.

It would make more sense if all lessons were unlocked once you pass the test, making it easier to jump straight to the material you need.

How Much Does LingoDeer Cost?
