Bolivia has the lowest prices on this list and the fewest foreign students, which is a strong combination if immersion is the point. Sucre is the study capital — a white colonial city with a university, a mild climate and a reputation for the clearest Spanish on the continent.

One-to-one tuition is the default and costs less than group classes do elsewhere, so you can afford far more contact hours than your budget would allow further north. Plan for altitude: La Paz sits at around 3,600m and takes several days to adjust to.

Bolivian Spanish, especially in Sucre, is slow and fully articulated, and is frequently described as the clearest in South America.
